A Warming Winter Favourite
With 3 playful variations – Cacao Lovers, Golden Porridge, and Zesty Orange Blossom.
Porridge, old friend. There may be no other meal that has stuck with me so wonderfully across the breadth of my entire life. Changing with the seasons, with moods, with age. What could be more comforting than slowly stirring the pot with a favourite wooden spoon, sipping tea, and wondering what to pull out of the cupboard to add to the bowl this morning?
This process of waking up is sacred, and it can determine so much of the rest of your day. Let’s fill it with joy.
This is one of our favourite ways to make porridge, taught to us by Mindful Foods Founder and all-round legend Georgie, with 3 healthy whole foods as a base, and a selection of mix-ins to suit your mood.
- Anti-inflammatory and all-round wonder food, turmeric, creates a mood-boosting and colourful start to the day when we add in a handful of our Mindful Foods Golden Granola.
- Cacao and warming spices create an energising and grounding bowl of goodness, perfect to start strong and keep going for hours.
- Orange zest and honey combine to make a vibrant, floral, uplifting meal.
Keep reading down below to see how we do it!

Porridge Base: (serves 2)
- 1/2 cup brown rice
- 1/3 cup quinoa
- 1tbsp chia seed
- 2 cardamom pods
- 1 tsp cinnamon powder
- Grated nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
Method
Bring the rice to boil in a saucepan with peeled cardamom pods, cinnamon, and 4 cups water – if needed, add extra boiling water so the rice is very well cooked. (20-30 mins).
**You can also use leftover rice/quinoa from last nights dinner for a speedy breakfast.
When there is still 1cm of water above the rice, add the quinoa and chia seeds, and continue to simmer. Add a pinch of salt and stir through.
Note: You can always add more hot water to the porridge if you prefer it to be a little more soupy.
This is your porridge base.
From here you can branch out into different variations
1. Cacao lovers porridge
Extra Ingredients:
- 1tbsp cacao powder
- 1 tbsp cacao nibs
- Pinch of nutmeg
- (optional) sweetener – honey or maple syrup
- (optional) Cacao Brain Power Granola
Add cacao powder, cacao nibs, a sweetener ie maple syrup if desired, and stir through. Serve into two bowls, pour mylk on top, and grated nutmeg. I like another pinch of salt, and a sprinkling of Cacao Brain Power activated granola for extra crunch! Enjoy!
2. Golden Porridge
Extra ingredients:
- 3/4 cup golden granola
- 1/2 cup blueberries (fresh or frozen)
- 2tsp maple syrup
- sweetener – honey or maple syrup
- (optional) fresh turmeric
Using your porridge base, and 1/2 cup Activated Golden Granola (add a splash more water to the mix), and grate a little fresh turmeric and sweetener if desired. If you can get your hands on it, a grating of fresh, golden turmeric rhizome really takes this to the next level.
Meanwhile, throw some fresh or frozen blueberries in a saucepan with a dash of honey or maple syrup and a splash of water, and on low heat, slowly stew them.
Serve the porridge in bowls, pour over mylk, sprinkle on some extra crunchy golden granola, and drizzle the warm caramelly blueberries on top!
3. Zesty Orange Blossom Porridge
Extra Ingredients:
- 1 tsp orange blossom water
- 1/2 tsp orange zest
- honey to taste
- toppings – chopped dates, hemp, almonds, or cashews
- (optional) edible flowers – nasturtium, marigolds, etc
When the porridge base is ready, stir in honey, zest, and orange blossom water. The zest packs a punch so add just a little at first and give it a taste.
Serve into bowls, add dates, nuts or seeds, and sprinkle with your favourite edible flowers. Simple! The subtle aroma of orange blossoms is energising at any time of year, and the zest gives this bowl a lingering deliciousness.

great to see you’ve put your porridge recipes up finally, Georgie 🙂
